Fellowship Corner: Meet Dr. Catherine Lu

In every edition of the CanSAGE News, we shine a spotlight on a current or graduated fellow from a different MIS fellowship program.

Where are you from originally, and where did you complete your medical training?

I’m originally from Toronto, and went to medical school at the University of Toronto, and residency at the University of Manitoba. I have continued to head west to the University of British Columbia for fellowship!

What makes your fellowship program unique?

This fellowship program has a special focus on endometriosis, including a plethora of surgical opportunities from bowel resections to upper abdominal endometriosis. The clinic’s multidisciplinary team provides a comprehensive learning opportunity in addition to an emphasis on outpatient transvaginal ultrasound assessment. As a fellow, you run your own fellow clinic and subsequently fellow OR, which help to consolidate and reinforce the skills acquired. The program director and entire team are incredibly supportive and will provide opportunities to focus on specific surgical techniques of interest, as well as many research opportunities.

What is your area of research interest?

Currently, endometriosis! There is so much that we still do not know about this underdiagnosed condition.

What would you say to someone who was considering a MIGS fellowship?

I would say that if you’ve thought about it, then follow that inkling and do it! Obstetrics and gynecology is a very broad residency and having the protected time to advance your surgical skills to have those extra tools in your toolbox, is undeniably beneficial.  Plus, the community is so supportive and what else is more exciting than brainstorming how to approach a complex pelvis!
