Get to Know a CanSAGE Board Member: Dr. Alysha Nensi

Dr. Nensi practices in Toronto.

What inspired you to pursue a career in minimally invasive surgery?

From early on in my training, I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. My time working with the MIGS staff and fellows as an elective medical student in Hamilton solidified my decision to specialize in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. The field offered the ideal blend of complex surgical techniques, challenging problem-solving, and a commitment to enhancing patient recovery and quality of life. I was also captivated by the field’s continuous innovation—new tools and techniques drive not only better patient outcomes but also a spirit of collaboration and networking within the surgical community, which made it an exciting path to pursue.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of my job is working with our trainees! It’s such a privilege to see our ambitious medical students, hardworking residents and superstar fellows grow and learn. The future is so bright!

Why did you decide to get involved with CanSAGE?

I first got involved with CanSAGE as a resident, attending the first meeting in Toronto when it was just a small group of people, many of whom were my early mentors. There was such a great group of passionate surgeons who seemed so committed to growing the specialty. I later joined the Board as the fellow rep, participated in the conference planning committee and now act as the Treasurer and its been amazing to see how the scope and reach of CanSAGE has expanded in just a few short years.

Do you have any hobbies? What do you do in your spare time?

When I’m not working, I love to travel, golf and hike with my husband and two year old daughter, Zoe!
