Get to Know a CanSAGE Board Member: Dr. Jessica Papillon Smith

Dr. Papillon Smith practices in Montreal.

What inspired you to pursue a career in MIGS?

I was lucky to train under an incredible group of mentors during residency at McGill — Drs. Krish, Mansour, Marcoux, and Ziegler — who each brought something different but equally inspiring to the table. Watching them confidently provide complex surgical care that directly improved women’s quality of life was powerful. It became clear to me early on that not enough women had access to this level of expertise, and I knew I wanted to be part of the movement to change that.

What’s the best part of your job?

Hands down, it’s the people I work with. I share a practice with like-minded colleagues who are passionate, innovative, and deeply committed to excellent patient care. We support each other, challenge each other, and constantly push the boundaries of what’s possible in Gyn surgery — all while keeping patients at the center of our work. I also love teaching and mentoring; watching our fellows and residents transform over the course of their training is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

There’s also something uniquely grounding about being in the OR. Time fades, distractions fall away, and you’re fully present, working with your hands. I tell my artist sister that it’s as creative as I’ll ever get— it’s immersive, meticulous, and unexpectedly calming. In a job filled with constant movement and decision-making, it’s the rare moment where your mind quiets, and everything aligns into doing one thing really well.

How did you get involved in CanSAGE?

I feel like I grew up with CanSAGE! I was a fellow when it was first starting out, and I’ve been involved ever since — initially presenting research and surgical videos, then helping organize bootcamp, later stepping into the Fellowship Program Director role, and now working with the executive board and co-leading the pre-conference course. CanSAGE has always been a central part of my professional life. There’s a great energy and a constant drive to do better and evolve, which makes it a fun and meaningful organization to be part of.

What do you do in your free time?

These days, most of my time outside work is spent with my husband and two young kids (ages 4 and 2), which means lots of outdoor play, baking muffins, and managing runny noses. In what now seems like a past life, I was a traveller, diver, snowboarder, soccer player — and I read books that weren’t authored by Sandra Boynton. That said, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
